Kent Based Artist, Musician and Designer "After a career in graphic design and print, I now devote my time to my love of art and music. I set up the Tudeley Art Group in 2002 and the Creative Cartel in 2005. Life drawing has always been an important discipline for me, which began in 1970 when I was studying for my 'A' Level Art at Kennington Boy's School, Brixton. At the suggestion of my art teacher Alan Swapp, I tottered off to the Camberwell Art School for regular Saturday morning Life drawing workshops.
Early drawing, Camberwell School of Art, 1970 It was also Alan's influence that helped to persuade my parents to let me apply for a place at art school. So, from 1971-72 I studied full-time at the Croydon College of Art (Foundation Course). I was subsequently offered a place at the London College of Printing to study graphic design, but opted for Watford School of Art.... an old Victorian establishment founded in 1872 with strong links to print and publishing. So, between 1972-75 I learnt about the various forms of print making, both commercial and fine art. However I opted to take my final exams in Illustration and not graphics....but I ended up as a graphic designer regardless!!!! Whilst at Watford studying graphics, print making became very important to me and through the inspirational teaching of Hansjorg Meyer, my mind was opened up to creativity in print. After graduating, my old secondary school art teacher Alan Swapp and I held a joint exhibition at Norwood Library.... Alan's wonderful landscape drawings and my experimental print making made an interesting combination. I then exhibited my etchings and silk screen prints at the Mall Galleries, the Redfern and Cork Street in 1978/9.
A long career in graphic design followed, but life drawing was never far away and I spent time at Sidcup Art School during Summer breaks drawing, drawing drawing. Below are a selection of recent pencil drawings taken from my sketch books produced at the Tudeley Art Group gatherings and the Tuscan workshops. The paintings are in the main from my head and very recent....except for the water colours produced in Tuscany "
